The Bremens were a Kalamazoo, Michigan based band formed in 1989 by members Adam Main on guitar and Maureen Mead on vocals, as well as C. Eric Lien on guitar.
Good chick rock bands were hard to find back then. Janice Joplin was long dead and Sheryl Crow hadn't even been born yet, so the masses in Kalamazoo clamored to The Bremens shows for Maureen's rambunctious dancing and catchy lyrics. Drummers came and went (at last count it was like 11), but the founding members of Main and Mead stayed, along with long-time guitar player Tom Courtney, bassist Rick Stubbs and violin player Jennifer McDonald. Two of the most memorable and longest-running drummers were found in Dave Tranquilla and Dan "The Mancub" Courtney, Tom Courtney's younger brother.
The Bremens lost their momentum as fans and band members graduated college and moved to far off places. Main and Mead, as well as Stubbs and McDonald married in 1996. Both unions have spawned a new breed of rock and roll star. The Bremens played their last formal gig sometime in 1999, although several members continue to play music in the Kalamazoo area and beyond in bands such as Pound and Beers, Catfish Gracie and Fonnmor. Main is currently working on a solo cd. Without a drummer, rock and roll with a violin is just bluegrass.
